AUGUST
August. Dog Days. The lazy, hazy,
never-ending days of sweltering heat. You can't even fish properly because
anything you catch comes out of the lake, poached.
But August does have its highlights! Like....melons!
Lush, low calorie, vitamin packed melons!
Mellon
balls freeze very well. Sprinkle with Splenda if you desire a sweeter
taste. Try adding spices such as a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Scoop
out a large melon and fill with an assortment of summer fruit.
Melons
make very tasty slushies. Freeze, then whirl in your blender.
Melons are a bit like berries - once they
are cut into, they won't keep well for a long period of time. Therefore,
try to enjoy as soon as possible.
When choosing your melons at the store, look
for withered stems and take a big sniff of the melon. You should be able
to pick up its sweet scent if it's fully ripened. Avoid melons that contain
gouges, slits, cuts or that are mushy or that are clearly evident of being over-ripe.
Melons can carry dangerous salmonella, so
you should wash your melon before slicing.
